Designer Tracy Reese knows all about it. "Know your customer's taste," she said during her 2005 Fashion Week runway show in New York in February.

Having graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York, she learned the ins and outs of the trade in Paris at the contemporary design firm of Arlequin. She is rubbing shoulders and receiving accolades from the likes of Narciso Rodriguez, Michael Kors and Carolina Herrera. Reese is known for the great and appealing design of her coats. She had to fall on her face, pay her dues to the industry. She worked for Perry Ellis and Mgashoni before she had the courage of venturing back out on her own. Once again, she received the backing of her father, a banker.

Designers never give up. "They are true problem-solvers," said Reese during the New York runway show. Reese, 40, is now poised the reap the fruits of her hard labor. With increase in sales, her label, TR Designs Inc., is scheduled to make high profits.

Part of Tracy Reese's success may have come from providing her consumers with haute couture that satisfies them. She designs to please them. Immersing herself in her surrounding, the foreign countries she has been to and US cities such as Chicago, New Orleans, San Francisco, Miami, she presents a collection that shows a diverse influence.

The stars and regular customers who buy from her collection are just laughing all the way to their house. For sure, California gilrs, from San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, to Visalia, Fresno in the Central Valley, will want to put their hands on one of her dresses for their prom and quincenera ceremonies. Which woman would not like to own one of Tracy Reese's evening gowns?

One of my buddies may be wondering why there is so much hoopla about a poncho. For a good part of the past Winter, he had been wearing his. He remembered having bought it the last time he was sober in Tijuana.

His girlfriend who has invested so much into fashion designs and designer outfits knew all along that the day would come when the fashion establishment would give justice to this piece of rectangular cloak. She is wondering why department stores such Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Gottschalks, and upscale boutiques did not run out of ponchos when Katie Couric introduced a mother-daughter manufacturer of Llamas Ponchos on her show a few seasons ago. Does this mean that Katie does not the power exercised by Martha who only has to wear her poncho once for it to become a new shopping phenomenon?

From MSNBC, CNN, Wall Street Journal, the New York Times to the San Francisco Chronicles, every single news organization takes notice of Martha’s outfit as she was released from prison. Was it part of the whole campaign for her to regain control of her company? The marketing gods have realized the true power of fashion and symbolisms. By brandishing the gray and black poncho, she was associated this long established South American cloak to her release from prison. It’s a marketing coup.

This poor woman should get her weekly, monthly stipend or royalties based on the sale of this hot item. If not, Martha should open a bank account in her name. The best thing that can happen is hand her the money her knitting has made upon her release from prison.
The craze for cashmere ponchos, poncho fashion has barely started. The Peruvians knew that the rest of the fashion world would get into ethnic clothing. Who can resist the allure of the South American kings and queens who wore Ponchos high in the Andes?
